Driving in Ottawa

While public transit and cycling are great ways to get around, Ottawa is also a drivable city with well-maintained roads and highways connecting different neighbourhoods and regions.

There is a good selection of car rental services available at the airport, downtown, and throughout the city. Whether you need a vehicle for a short trip or an extended stay, rental companies like Enterprise, Hertz, and Budget offer flexible options.

In the city, the speed limit is generally 50 km/h (30 mph) unless otherwise stated. Many streets in downtown Ottawa are one-way, so watch for the signs (a rectangular sign with a white arrow on a black background). Some roadways, known as the Transitway, are reserved for public transit buses and emergency vehicles only — do not drive in these lanes.

Like most cities, Ottawa experiences rush-hour traffic, especially on the Queensway (Highway 417) and bridges between Ottawa and Gatineau. If you’re not used to driving in winter conditions, remember that snow and ice can make roads slippery and traffic slower than usual.

Parking

There is a three-hour parking limit on all City of Ottawa streets unless otherwise marked. During rush hours (7 a.m.–9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.–5:30 p.m.), many downtown streets prohibit parking and stopping to improve traffic flow. Always check nearby signs for parking restrictions. From November 15 to April 1, overnight parking (1 a.m.–7 a.m.) is prohibited when seven cm or more of snow are forecast. Visit the City of Ottawa website to learn more about overnight parking bans.

Alternatively, Park & Ride can be a great option to avoid the trouble of finding a parking space. OC Transpo provides over 9,000 free spaces at Park & Ride lots across Ottawa and nearby rural areas. Learn more about Park & Ride on the OC Transpo website.

Ottawa International Airport (YOW)

For travellers flying in or out of Ottawa, the Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier International Airport (YOW) is the city’s main hub for domestic and international flights. Located just 20 minutes from downtown Ottawa, the airport is easily accessible by car, taxi, or OC Transpo bus service. Some hotels provide shuttle services to and from the airport. The airport offers over 150 daily flights to more than 40 destinations — including most major cities in Canada, the United States, Europe, and seasonal Caribbean routes. Check schedules and services on the Ottawa Airport website.
